Our old calico of decades ago (dang, I'm old) was a friend to all who belonged on the farm, be they human, feline, canine, equine, or bovine. She took care of her kittens. And she hunted every form of small pest within a quarter-mile of the barn. In other words, she was decent, a good mother, and worked for a living.
