Slightly dated, but he points to, but doesn't realize, how STATES are the issue, on the model of Federalist 46. A civil war will be much more like the Revolution and the 1861-65 War Between the States, than the Ireland Troubles. I tell blue-checkmark Trump supporters in California that they'll be interned the instant it breaks. And Biden supporters in my Red State will be... Well, we won't go there.

A hot war would be preferable to legal and political war for one key reason: It settles things. Law and politics can be "disputed" because someone says it is, regardless of the outcome, and the trouble continues. But when the victor has the proverbial bayonet to the throat of the vanquished, it doesn't matter. The victor is the victor, and the vanquished can say they gave it their all in the only court under Heaven that really settles things--the Court of Blood and Iron.
