MY VIEW: All troops should have backup arms, even if just pocket guns. Maybe allow troops their private pistols, within some parameters.

Caveat: M4s can be fired one-handed in a pinch. I've done it.

Interesting is that the training manual post World War II seems to allow for individual choice of calibers, plus even single-action revolvers.
