Interesting video series from YouTube's "Task & Purpose" on evolution of Infantry -- You be the judge.
UPSHOT: He predicts infantry will go to smaller-unit and emphasis on fighting in tunnels. That will mean smaller arms and silencers (or massive ear-pro). Perhaps this connects.

MY VIEW: All troops should have backup arms, even if just pocket guns. Maybe allow troops their private pistols, within some parameters. Caveat: M4s can be fired one-handed in a pinch. I've done it.
