The real cost of cutting the military budget.

Fiscal conservatives need to shut up and let the apparatus that protects the opportunity for them to focus on their pocketbooks and portfolios do that, and Ron Paul and his co-delusionists--whose libertarian ideology depends on the very American hegemony in the world they despise so much--need to just shut up, period.

Misguided Military Talk

The real cost of cutting the military budget.

1:00 PM, Feb 9, 2011 • By THOMAS DONNELLY

"The Department of Defense is a government bureaucracy, cousin to the Department of Education, the Department of Agriculture, and the rest. That means it has the same Dawn of the Dead–zombie instincts."

/><p class=

Stephanie Gutmann's National Review Online blog post perfectly encapsulates the frustration fiscal conservatives have toward their national security brethren. It similarly reflects the conundrum facing the House Republican leadership as it prepares for the murderous-yet-critical period, beginning next week, when it begins to try to operationalize its shrink-the-government mandate. Having to distinguish between government priorities is so much messier than just taking a chain saw to everything equally.

Gutmann, like the House leadership, does not profess to be "a line-by-line expert on the military budget," but that seems to reinforce her "common sense [that] says there's a nice layer of lard that can be pared before we hit muscle and bone." And, channeling the Carl-Icahn-like spirit of business-minded conservatives, she suspects "the services might even work better if forced to run a little leaner."

Well no one would deny that the Pentagon is indeed a large bureaucracy, and suffers from many defects that government bureaucracies are prone to. Yet there always turn out to be big problems in translating Gutmann's "common sense" into practical military policy, as the list of cuts she gathered from her "Facebook friends" in uniform indicates.

Among those recommendations was the hardy perennial – particularly attractive to isolationist libertarians – of withdrawing the "tens of thousands of troops stationed in Germany and the UK." Whatever the strategic wisdom of leaving the feckless Europeans to fend for themselves, the fact is that, as a budget matter, a redeployment of those forces to the United States would actually increase near-term costs; the military construction alone would run billions of dollars. But there's more to it than that: U.S. bases in Europe are not simply paid-off real estate investments, they're critical nodes for projecting power around the world. One of the responses to Gutmann's post eloquently captured one piquant manifestation of the value of this infrastructure: "Ever think about how many Americans would have died in the past eight years were it not for Landstuhl Army hospital [in Germany]?"

Like many others before her, Gutmann likes the budgetary look of the Few and Proud: "The Marines, the service that gets the least money per capita, is also considered to be the most effective."  But even otherwise sympathetic respondents pointed out that this was "foolish" USMC propaganda: "Yes, the USMC has the lowest per-capita spending, but they have the least capital-intensive mission…." The Marines rely on other services – especially, such as in Iraq and Afghanistan, when they are employed on long-run missions ashore, the Army – for all sorts of support. The Marines also require pretty expensive gear: the just-terminated Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, essentially a tank on jet skis; the V-22 "tilt-rotor" half-chopper, half-fixed-wing airplane; the vertical take-of version of the F-35 fighter, on two-year probation from Defense Secretary Robert Gates.  "Then, of course," reminded another post-responder, "the USMC deploys from these little floaty things called 'ships.'" The Marines are exactly the kind of exceptional force that distinguishes the U.S. military from other militaries, but they don't come cheap.

In sum, the unpleasant truth is that the Pentagon, bureaucratic mastodon that it is, is profoundly unlike the Department of Education – there are mortal and immediate consequences for being wrong in war. Indeed, if the "education blob" did half as good a job of educating America's children as the "military-industrial complex" does at killing our enemies, "winning the future" would not be a contest. Conservatives, especially, ought to emphasize the need to properly reshape government rather than simply re-size government.  Call it uncommon sense.

The (not-so-)strange thing is, Ron Paul probably supports this

First, Obongo talks to the Palestinian sheetheads before he talks to their Prime Minister.  Then, he won't bow to their monarch, unlike his treatment of his co-religionist over Saudi Arabia.  And now this?

The American people will have a lot to answer for to their cousins.

Undermining Allies

While everyone's attention seems to be focused on the crisis in Egypt, a bombshell revelation about the administration's foreign policy in Europe has largely gone unnoticed.
The British newspaper The Telegraph has reported that part of the price which President Obama paid to get Russia to sign the START treaty, limiting nuclear arms, was revealing to the Russians the hitherto secret size of the British nuclear arsenal. This information came from the latest WikiLeaks documents.
To betray vital military secrets of this country's oldest, most steadfast and most powerful ally, behind the back of the British government, is something that should set off alarm bells. Following in the wake of earlier betrayals of prior American commitments to put a nuclear shield in Eastern Europe, and the undermining of Israel and calculated insults to its prime minister, this pattern raises serious, and perhaps almost unthinkable, questions about the Obama administration's foreign policy.
One of Barack Obama's first acts as President of the United States was to fly to Russia and try to get a deal with the Russian government by welshing on an existing American commitment to put a nuclear shield in Eastern Europe.
Obama's glib rhetoric about how he was pressing "the reset button" on American foreign policy treated the ongoing international commitments of the American government as something that each new administration is free to disregard.
Nations that ally themselves with the United States, and who cooperate in many ways to oppose the threat of international terrorism, do so at the risk of their own national safety and even survival. To make America's reciprocal commitments to them contingent on the whims of each new administration is to make other nations have to think twice about allying themselves with the U.S.
Since the fight against international terrorism requires not only information about terrorist activities and networks from other countries' intelligence services, but also cooperation from other countries' financial institutions, in order to block terrorists' transfers of money to finance their deadly activities.
This is in addition to other nations' direct military involvement in the fight against terrorists in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places, current and prospective-- not to mention providing military access through their lands when needed.
But doing such things invites retaliation from the terrorists and from the leading international sponsor of terrorism, Iran, which may in a very few years have nuclear

From ACT! for America: Video: Radical Imam; info on Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Woolf

Brigitte Gabriel discusses radical imam

Dear Lee,

Last week Sean Hannity interviewed Imam Anjem Choudary, an outspoken radical imam in Great Britain. After the interview, Hannity discussed Choudary's views with Brigitte Gabriel, president of ACT! for America.

Log on here to watch the two short segments. You've got to see this!

This is what Europe has been wrestling with for years now—and it's coming our way.

Several weeks ago we emailed you about the plight of Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Woolf, who is one of our international chapter leaders in Austria. Many of you responded, and we thank you.

Elisabeth has been charged with committing hate speech, because she has dared to expose the kind of evil that Imam Choudary espouses.

Elisabeth continues to need our help for her legal defense fund, as her trial now is going to the next phase.

Please log on here if you can help Elisabeth with a contribution, and feel free to leave a comment in support as well. When you make a contribution remember it's in euros, and one dollar is equal to about .732 euros. So, for example, if you want to give $20, make your contribution 15 euros.

After you view Imam Choudary's comments you may wonder how it's possible that someone with his views has the right of free speech, but when someone like Elisabeth exposes those views, she is charged with a crime.

The answer is that sharia law, and its prohibition of criticism of Islam, is taking root in the West.

My Rants (Issue 3 -- 06 FEB 2011) "The Arab revolution and Western decline"

My Rants
Issue 3 -- 06 FEB 2011

It's not America's fault.  It's her PEOPLE.

The Arab revolution and Western decline

From haaretz.com

http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/the-arab-revolution-and-western-decline-1.340967

SNIPPIT:
Carter's betrayal of the Shah brought us the ayatollahs, and will soon bring us ayatollahs with nuclear arms. The consequences of the West's betrayal of Mubarak will be no less severe. It's not only a betrayal of a leader who was loyal to the West, served stability and encouraged moderation. It's a betrayal of every ally of the West in the Middle East and the developing world. The message is sharp and clear: The West's word is no word at all; an alliance with the West is not an alliance. The West has lost it. The West has stopped being a leading and stabilizing force around the world.

COMMENT: This is NOT America's fault.  It is her PEOPLE'S fault!  Between the self-hating and America-hating Left, and the non-patriotic, isolationist, selfish libertarians on the Right, "They the People" are destroying Western civilization.

Note also the following from my most recent Rant (with two additions[*]):

*1976--The American people elect incompetent and barely competent administration that runs down America's position and power.

*1980--The American people elect a competent and patriotic leader who works to rebuild that position and power.

---

1991--The American people rejoice in the victory over Saddam Hussein, then complain he was not removed.

2001--The American people want sheetheads killed.

2003--The administration in power Hussein is removed from power, and the American people complain that fighting continues and some WMDs aren't found.

2004--Then the American people re-elect the administration about which they complained.

2006--Then the American people undercut, just two years later, that administration and troops they sent overseas and vote out the administration's party.

2008--The American people vote in what amounts to a Marxist cousin to Hussein and the people they wanted killed in 2001.

2010--Then American people "shellac" the party they gave full power to just two years earlier, basically for doing exactly what the party said it would do.

If a specific world leader were to be so fickle, inconsistent, and unpredictable, no other country on Earth would ever trust him/her, and would likely consider the person mentally unbalanced.  Yet somehow we entrust a similarly-minded collective leadership--that is, the American people--with "freedom" and political power.

Someone please tell me again why we traded one tyrant 3000 miles away for 3000 tyrants one mile away.

True story: A fellow I know is looking into getting a concealed-carry permit.  So he's preparing to spend at least $80 for the training, around $35 for the permit itself, and probably $300 at least for the carry weapon.  Approximate total: $415.  Yet this same fellow complains when he gets approached by the NRA for a $20 donation to help secure the validity of his permit.  Another case of selfishness hurting the selfish one.

Ironically, the fellow is now facing a possible legal issue in his background affecting his gun rights.  It seems that some relatively changes in federal gun laws might, due to an event long ago in his life, prevent him from even possessing a weapon.  How ironic.

I hope that, if the fellow comes out of the legal matter with his gun rights, this situation will show him the importance of supporting the gun rights movement.  But I have my doubts.

Perhaps gun rights should be limited to members of legitimate gun rights groups--gun shop dealer to customer: "I'll need to see your photo ID and NRA membership card."

That's all!
